Vietnam seeks further economic ties at G20 gathering

Vietnamese PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc met top leaders of the world`s economic powers for further trade.

Vietnam’s Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has discussed further cooperation for bilateral ties and regional free trade agreements with the world’s largest economies at the recently-concluded G20 Summit in Japan.

In meetings on June 28-29 with top leaders of the US, the EU, Germany, Russia, Canada, China, Australia, Chile, and India, PM Phuc discussed measures to strengthen bilateral relations with the partners, mostly in economics that covers ways for further two-way trade. 

Phuc said it was an opportunity to talk about the growing economic ties with the country’s partners, highlighting Vietnam’s willingness to offer favorable conditions for foreign investors and openness in engaging in free-trade markets. 

In the meeting with US President Donald Trump, Phuc talked about the bilateral cooperation focus which includes trade and energy (LNG import) while Trump proposed joining hands in coping with falsified origin of products and trade frauds. 

In talks with China’s President Xin Jinping (the third meeting between the two over the past seven months), the two leaders affirmed the implementation of agreements signed by the two countries’ leaders before and pledged more exchange visits between senior officials.

Meanwhile, Phuc and Canadian counterpart Justin Trudeau agreed to cooperate for the efficiency of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). They reached consensus on expanding cooperation in finance, hi-tech, agriculture, recycling, and education. 

In the meeting with India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the two governments’ leaders said they need further efforts for deepened ties in trade, energy, defense, education, culture exchange, tourism, and aviation. 

Chile’s President Sebastian Piñera expressed his hope in the meeting with PM Phuc that the two countries should boost the bilateral and multilateral ties, mostly the Pacific Alliance (PA) and the Chile-ASEAN cooperation.

At the encounter with PM Phuc, President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker, Phuc highlighted Vietnam’s contributions to the international integration and the cooperation with the EU.

This is the fourth time Vietnam participated in G20 Summit over the past ten years. This year, Vietnam is one of the eight special guests invited by Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. Accordingly, Vietnam was invited to participate in almost all sessions and contribute to the joint statement at the summit of the group, which accounts for two third of the world’s population and holds 90% of global GDP.
