Vietnam looks to raise the ratio of children wearing helmets to 80% by 2020, Deputy Prime Minister Truong Hoa Binh said at a ceremony held in Hanoi on June 12, local media reported.The ceremony hailed the program of presenting 1.93 million standard helmets to first-grade students in the 2019-2020 academic year, with the theme “Keep full dreams together”.

Addressing the event, Deputy PM Truong Hoa Binh praised the three sides for launching a significant program and asked them to find ways to raise the number of children wearing helmet as it is still low.
The deputy PM noted that a survey in 10 provinces showed only around 60% of first-grade students wearing helmets when they are driven to school while helmets were delivered to all of them by late 2018. He blamed many parents for not putting helmets on their children when taking them on their bikes.
Deputy Prime Minister Truong Hoa Binh said that this is one of the reasons why there are still about 2,000 children injured every year during traffic accidents. In 2018, although the number decreased by nearly 12% compared to 2017, 1,442 children still fell victims to traffic accidents.
Binh encourages primary schools to give donated standard helmets to first graders during in the school year opening ceremony for 2019-2020 nationwide and complete the donation of hats in September 2019.
The deputy PM also requested the three sides to organize a helmet wearing march in support for the campaign "Show love to your child, wear him a helmet” launched on the first Sunday of September 2019 on the eve of the 2019-2020 school year.
