Vietnam to host GEOSEA Congress for the first time

The event is an opportunity to cooperate and foster an exchange of ideas, experiences, results, information and cooperation in geology, minerals and energy resources in the ASEAN community and related international organizations.

The Vietnamese Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE) will host the Regional Congress on Geology, Mineral and Energy Resources of Southeast Asia (GEOSEA) for the first time on October 16-17, the Vietnamese government's portal reported.

Around 500 delegates will share information and experiences on research, basic geological surveys, mineral and energy resources among ASEAN member nations.

The 15th GEOSEA congress will be an opportunity to cooperate and foster an exchange of ideas, experiences, results, information and cooperation in geology, minerals and energy resources in the ASEAN community and related international organizations.

The event also targets to promote ASEAN cooperation on mining in line with the ASEAN Minerals Cooperation Action Plan 2016-2020.

The congress is designed in eight sub-committees covering all areas of expertise in geology, environment and geological resources, namely paleontology-stratigraphy - sedimentology; mineralogy-geochemistry; metamorphic–magmatic petrology; marine geology; geophysics; structural geology- tectonics–metallogeny; mineral resources and mining industry; energy resources and development; hydrogeology, water resources and management; environmental geology-geological heritage, geopark; geo-engineering and urban geology; and climate change and geo-hazards.

Up to now, the organizing committee has received 305 scientific papers, including 127 from international delegates and 178 from local delegates, the General Department of Geology and Mineral Resources said.

It added that this event will attract not only scientists from ASEAN member countries but also prestigious international scientists from advanced countries such as the US, the UK, Germany, Russia, Japan, Denmark, Canada and China.

Besides, the organizing committee will carry out field trips before and after the event to areas with typical geology and geological resources. This is a great opportunity for Vietnamese and international scientists to learn more about Vietnam’s geological resources.

GEOSEA was first established and launched at the University of Malaysia in 1972 with four founding members, namely the Malaysian Geological Association, the Indonesian Geological Association, the Philippine Geological Association and the Thailand Geological Association. Since then, all ASEAN countries have joined GEOSEA. The Vietnamese delegation first attended GEOSEA in 1978.
