Vietnam always considers the ensuring water security is not only imperative but also a long-term mission for the national sustainable development, Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai said at the 4th International Symposium and Exhibition on Vietnam Water Cooperation Initiative (VACI 2015) held in Hanoi on October 19.
Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Nguyen Thai Lai said that the annual conference and exhibition was first launched in 2012 with the aim to create a forum for relevant sides to seek cooperation opportunities and introduce cutting-edge technologies and solutions.
This year’s event heard nearly 100 reports from 20 countries, all focusing on water security.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Deputy Minister Nguyen Thai Lai emphasized the important message of Secretary General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon on the World Water Day 2015: "Water is very important and necessary to food security, energy, while playing the important role to industry sector."
Statistics from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment figured out Vietnam now has around 840 billion cubic metres of surface water, up to 60% of which originates in foreign countries upstream.
Addressing the event, Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai stressed that like many other countries across the globe, Vietnam is facing serious challenges relating to water security during the process of socio-economic development.
Such challenges are brought about by climate change and environmental degradation in tandem with negative impacts of unsustainable development policies and plans over the past decades, he said.
To reach the target of ensuring water security for national sustainable development in the near future, the Vietnamese Government is striving to perfect water-related policies, laws and strategies, strengthen international co-operations with the countries sharing the same water resources, apply advanced technologies in water resource management as well as educate people to economically use water, Hai stressed.
The Deputy Prime Minister called on localities, agencies, organisations and individuals to promote initiatives to ensure water security, thus contributing to environmental protection, poverty reduction, economic growth and the global goal of sustainable development.
