Vietnam wins non-permanent seat at UNSC with record votes
This is the second time the country has been elected a non-permanent member of the UNSC, after the first in 2008-2009.
Vietnam has become a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2020-2021 tenure after getting a historic record high of votes, showing its prestige in the international arena.
The Southeast Asian country, the only candidate of the Asia-Pacific region, won 192 votes out of the 193 member countries and territories of the UN General Assembly on June 7 evening (Hanoi time).
This is the second time the country has been elected a non-permanent member of the UNSC, after the first in 2008-2009. A candidate needed to secure at least 129 votes to win the seat.
Vietnam will officially assume the new position from January 1, 2020 together with other four countries.
Speaking to the media right after the election, Deputy Foreign Minister Le Hoai Trung thanked the international community’s support and pledged that Vietnam will play a constructive and responsible role in this position at the UNSC.
Vietnamese President Nguyen Phu Trong, who is also General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, appreciated the UN members’ support and expressed his belief that Vietnam will fulfill the role, being a worthy trusted partner for sustained peace.
The UNSC is one of the six major UN organs, comprising of 15 members, including five permanent with veto right and 10 ones serving two-year tenures without veto right. As per the UN Charter, it is the only UN organ to have the right to assess threats to peace and propose or decide on measures to maintain or restore global peace and security.
