The sales of online shopping in 2015 reached 4.07 billion USD, increasing by 37% against to the same period of last year, accounting for around 2.8% of country`s total retail sales, according to the new report of the Ministry of Industry and Trade.
The Ministry of Industry and Trade said that more than 10,000 e-commerce websites were registered in Vietnam at the end of last year, twice the number of 2014.
The sales of online shopping in 2015 reached 4.07 billion USD, accounting for around 2.8% of country's total retail sales, according to the ministry's Vietnam E-commerce and Information Technology Agency.
The sales were forecast to hit 10 billion USD in the next five years.
The report covered all companies with websites that allow visitors to buy products and services.
Biggest earners were Lazada, a subsidiary of Germany's Rocket Internet, platform chodientu, and discount website Hotdeal. Vietnam Airlines and The Gioi Di Dong (Mobileworld) was also named among businesses with strong online sales.
Vietnam E-commerce and Information Technology Agency which implemented a survey among nearly 970 Internet users nationwide said that in 2015, around 62% of Internet users in Vietnam did online shopping, compared to 58% in 2014.
Clothes, footwear and cosmetics were the most popular among Vietnamese online shoppers, followed by electronics and digital devices.
Each online shopper spent an average of 160 USD, compared to 145 USD in the year before, the agency said.
Despite their increased engagement in online shopping, 91% of the interviewed shoppers paid their online orders in cash, according to the agency.
Less than half of them transferred money via bank accounts, while 20% used credit cards.
