Vietnamese children studying at foreign-invested preschools must learn Vietnamese language in order to improve vocabulary and enhance language skills so that they could use mother tongue in daily communication.
Mother tongue and Vietnamese studies are compulsory for Vietnamese students at foreign-invested educational institutions, according to a draft circular of the Ministry of Education and Training (MoET).

Vietnamese children studying at foreign-invested preschools must learn Vietnamese language in order to improve vocabulary and enhance language skills so that they could use mother tongue in daily communication. Vietnamese subjects should be taught twice a week with the total duration of 25 to 35 minutes.
Vietnamese pupils of primary education at foreign-invested schools must be taught initial knowledge of Vietnamese language, culture and people. The schools must spend at least 140 minutes per week to teach those Vietnamese subjects.
In addition, in 4th and 5th grade, elementary students will be taught in no less than 70 minutes per week Vietnamese subjects. The program helps them have a basic understanding of Vietnamese history and geography.
Secondary and high school students must study Vietnamese subjects relating to history, geography, culture, traditions and customs for no less than 90 minutes per week.
The teachers of Vietnamese language and Vietnamese studies must be Vietnamese people; the language of teaching is Vietnamese. Foreign-invested educational institutions are encouraged to teach these two subjects in Vietnamese or foreign languages to foreigners who are studying at the institutions.
Learners will be exempted from Vietnamese language if they have a relevant certificate granted by other schools in Vietnam, or if they attend a foreign program at a Vietnamese school.
