Vietnamese websites hit by over 6,500 cyber security attacks

In Vietnam, there are about 100,000 IP addresses daily connected to computer networks infected with the virus.

The Vietnam Computer Emergency Response Team (VNCERT) reported that more than 6,500 attacks on Vietnamese websites were reported in the first eight months of 2018.

VNCERT recorded a total of 6,567 attacks on Vietnamese websites with all three types of malware, deface (interface change) and phishing. In particular, deface topped with 3,818 incidents, followed by phishing with 1,800 incidents, and malware with 949 attacks.

VNCERT’s statistics show that in 2017, the center's surveillance system recorded 13,382 cyber attacks on Vietnamese websites, including 5,215 malware crashes, 4,155 site interface changes and 2,141 phishing attacks.

In Vietnam, there are about 100,000 IP addresses daily connected to computer networks infected with the virus. The security breach is increasing at an estimated rate of more than 300% per year.

Vietnam's websites and portals were attacked with an alarming frequency. In particular, the largest number of attacks were recorded on the domain name “.vn”, accounting for 44.07%, followed by “.com.vn” (36.58%) and “.edu.vn” (9.45%). Governmental websites registered with a “.gov.vn” domain were struck by 4.72% of the total attacks, the VNCERT said.

Identifying the frequency of network security incidents in Vietnam is quite large, the representative from the VNCERT said that the type of attack most commonly used by hackers is information gathering, accounting for 70%.

Besides, other types of attacks are also used by hackers such as attacking to take control, attacking with malicious code and attacking the web application, the representative added.

Vietnam ranks fourth among ten countries controlled by computer viruses (ma - botnet), with more than 637,000 computers controlled by the virus.

On the website http://securelisst.com, Vietnam ranked fifth among the ten countries with the highest denial-of-service attacks (DdoS) in the fourth quarter of 2017.
