Vietnam's agriculture accelerates development associated with tourism

The National One Commune One Product (OCOP) program has boosted rural economic development, contributing to arousing the potential of land, products, and advantages of regional cultural values.

In the coming time, the development of Vietnam's agriculture will be associated with preserving and promoting traditional cultural values, and craft villages, with an aggressive application of digital transformation and innovation.

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Minh Hoan gave his statement at the OCOP conference last week in Hanoi, adding that the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) will finalize the drafting of mechanisms, policies and documents guiding the implementation of the National Target Program on New Rural Areas Development in the 2021-2025 period.

Provinces and cities will be asked to map out schemes/plans for the implementation of the programs of  OCOP New Rural Tourism Development in the 2021-2025 period.

Outstanding achievements

According to the MARD’s latest report, the country has nearly 8,500 OCOP products certified with three stars or more so far.

As of August 31, all 63 provinces and cities nationwide have rated OCOP products, of which, 65.4% rated three stars, 33.4% four stars and 1% to be graded five stars, and 0.2% already classified in the five-star category.

The program has attracted 4,351 OCOP subjects including cooperatives (accounting for 38.3%), enterprises (26.1%), production establishments/business households (33.3%), and cooperative groups.

During three years, Hanoi has had more than 1,600 OCOP products rated three stars or higher, making it the pioneer in developing OCOP products.

 An overview of the event.

Speaking at the conference, Chief of the National Coordination Office for New Rural Development Ngo Truong Son said the OCOP program has boosted rural economic development, contributing to arousing the potential of land, products, and advantages of regional cultural values. Agricultural development has been sucessfully linked with services and tourism in some provinces and cities.

Through the program, many localities have planned specialty raw materials areas, developed rural industries, as well as created many OCOP products with the brand name.

In particular, many localities have actively developed groups of rural tourism products, services, and tourist attractions and so far a total of 65 OCOP products in the group of community-based tourism services and rural tourist attractions have been certified.

The country strives for cooperatives to make up at least 40% and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to account for 30% of OCOP entities. Some 30% of OCOP manufacturers would establish a closed value chain toward the circular economy, according to the National OCOP program for 2021-2025.

At least 50% of rural craft villages will have OCOP products. Each province and city will have one OCOP showroom.

Hanoi's target

According to the latest plan to implement Hanoi’s OCOP program by 2025, the city targets to complete the assessment and rating for at least 2,000 OCOP products.

Each district and town will build at least one center for creative design, introducing and selling OCOP products as well as promoting craft villages associated with tourism.

The city also targets to have 100% of shopping malls and supermarkets selling OCOP products, as well as at least 50% of OCOP producers trading in modern sales channels such as supermarkets, convenience stores, and e-commerce platforms.

To make the goal possible, Hanoi will prioritize upgrading specialties and traditional craft villages as well as assisting in the branding of certified products.
