Speaking at the event, Vietnamese Ambassador to South Africa Vu Van Dung thanked the organisers of the ASEAN – Africa Trade Fair, the first of its kind, saying that the event presents an opportunity for Vietnamese artist Nguyen Minh Son to introduce Vietnam’s culture and contemporary fine art.
Son’s presentation enabled visitors to get an insight into the landscape and people of Vietnam, including the UNESCO-recognised natural wonder of Ha Long Bay, Nha Trang beach, Hanoi’s old quarter and Hoi An ancient city, among others.
The work arts displayed at the event were previously showcased at exhibitions in London, Singapore, the US, Hong Kong (China) and South Korea. A number of the works were presented to the Embassy of Vietnam in South Africa. Participants also ate Vietnamese food during the event.
Vietnamese cuisine encompasses the foods and beverages of Vietnam and features a combination of five fundamental tastes in the overall meal.
Each Vietnamese dish has a distinctive flavor which reflects one or more of these elements. Common ingredients include fish sauce, shrimp paste, soy sauce, rice, fresh herbs, fruit, and vegetables.
Vietnamese recipes use lemongrass, ginger, mint, Vietnamese mint, long coriander, Saigon cinnamon, bird's eye chili, lime, and Thai basil leaves.
Traditional Vietnamese cooking is greatly admired for its fresh ingredients, minimal use of dairy and oil, complementary textures, and reliance on herbs and vegetables.
With the balance between fresh herbs and meats and a selective use of spices to reach a fine taste, Vietnamese food is considered one of the healthiest cuisines worldwide.
