Addressing the seminar on building of Strategic Media Framework of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism for 2017-2020 period held in Hanoi on December 8, VNAT Deputy Director Ngo Hoai Chung said that a ceremony to welcome the 10 millionth tourist is scheduled to take place on 25 December at Phu Quoc Airport.
According to the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism, the number of international visitors to the country is expected to reach 10 million arrivals in 2016, a landmark for the country.
VNAT Deputy Director Ngo Hoai Chung said that Vietnam tourism is expected to welcome 10 million international tourists and reaching its revenue of about 400 trillion VND, 18 billions USD in 2016.
With an impressive growth, the tourism is expected to fulfill the target earlier than 4 years set for the Vietnam Tourism Development Strategy by 2020, with a vision to 2030.
The data from the VNAT showed the number of foreign visitors to Vietnam surged sharply in 2016.
In the first 11 months of this year, Vietnam welcomed over 9 million overseas tourists, representing a year-on-year increase of more than 25 percent.
In November alone, the country welcomed about 920,000 foreign guests, up 14 percent against the previous month.
2016 is expected to be the first time that the Vietnam's international visitors could reach about 10 million arrivals.
Apart from job generation, the tourism industry also spurred retail sales and other service sectors.
The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) under the UK-based Economist Group attributed the positive growth to the 15-day visa exemption policy for citizens from the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain, which runs from June 2015 to June 2017.
According to the World Tourism and Travel Council, tourism contributed 6.6 percent to Vietnam’s gross domestic product in 2015. The proportion will touch 15.2 percent in 2016.
The tourism promotion, especially the media has played an important role in gaining a positive result of the sector in 2016, experts stressed.
"According to our research, before preparing for the trip, 60% of visitors seek the information on the internet, 30% of tourists get references from theis relatives and about 10% through other channels. It shows the media is very important to promote tourism growth," Deputy Director Ngo Hoai Chung noted.
