Phu Lang is a non-commercial pottery village situated at the base of a small chain of hills on the banks of the Cau River in Bac Ninh. It is part of an old pottery village triangle in Northern Vietnam which includes Bat Trang and Tho Ha.
This village has been making pottery since the 13th century, and around half the residents produces clay pots, decorative tiles, jars and the most lucrative item - burial caskets. Phu Lang pottery is unique and defined by the brown glazed colour and specific texture due to the raw clay found in the region.
The villagers use pink clay from the villages of Thong Vat and Cung Kiem in Viet Thong Commune. The clay is transported by boat and then by tricycles to the various pottery enterprises.
Firewood is chopped and dried naturally. The major products of Phu Lang pottery village include jars, bowls, vases, cups, incense burners, and many other items. This job needs skillful hands. The products are dried thoroughly in the sun before being fired in kilns.
Tourists can try to make patterns on ceramic products.
Pottery is typically fired for 3 days and 3 nights.
Baked products are evaluated, classified and repaired before sales. |
