Vietnam`s hydropower projects have exploited and utilized water resources effectively, contributing to ensuring national energy security and promoting socio-economic development.
The Vietnamese government has approved 818 hydropower projects so far, with a total installed capacity of 23,182 MW, the Ministry of Industry and Trade has said in a report.
Of the total, 385 hydroelectric projects with a total installed capacity of 18,564MW have been put into operation. 143 hydropower projects with a total installed capacity of 1,848MW are under construction and 290 with installed capacity of 2.770MW are under study.
Of the 385 hydro projects in operation, 40 projects have no reservoirs or use the water for irrigation to generate electricity.
The Ministry of Industry and Trade said that, in general, in the national power system in 2017, hydropower projects account for about 40% of installed capacity and about 42.87% of electricity.
According to the government's National Power Development Plan VII, hydropower development is a priority target, with the installed capacity of hydropower plants reaching 25,400MW by 2030.
The ministry also said that for dam inspection, in 2018, 315/345 dams were approved and 30 dams were submitted to authorities for approval.
Up to 302/345 dams have been approved for flood control in the downstream area, 307/345 dams have been approved for dam protection.
