According to the Hanoi Police Department, more than 170 prisoners have benefited from the state's leniency policy this time.
Of the total, 80 prisoners have been conditionally released and 93 have had their sentences reduced by 2-10 months.
The pardon and remission of prison sentence are intended to show the leniency of the Party and the State, and to demonstrate the Vietnamese tradition of giving prisoners a chance to rehabilitate themselves and contribute to social development.
"The prisoners have paid for their crimes by spending time behind bars," said Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Manh Hung, Deputy Director of the Prisoner Management Camp at the Detention Center No.1.
Prisoners are eligible for state clemency three times a year, on the National Reunification Day (April 30), the National Independence Day (September 2) and the Tet holiday.
