Multiplying the good and repelling the bad

2020 is the 28th year that the “Good people and good deeds” movement of Hanoi has been sped up, gradually becoming a cultural trait and an identity which not only embellish but also positively contribute to the development of the land of a thousand years of civilization.

Reaching every corner of life

In 1992, Hanoi was the first locality in the country to launch the “Good people and good deeds” movement, which has been widely implemented citywide as an outstanding emulation brand of the Capital in response to President Ho Chi Minh's call for patriotic emulation. In association with such campaigns as "All people unite to build cultural life in residential areas", "All people unite to build new countryside and a civilized city", “Forming elegant and civilized styles of Hanoi people”, the movement has reached every corner of the city, and received positive response by all authority levels, sectors and people in the city, as well as followed by other provinces and cities.

The “Good people and good deeds” award regulations has been frequently revised, with the focus on timely discovering, rewarding, being disseminated and replicating praiseworthy examples from the grassroots level. After 28 years, the results of this particular emulation movement in all fields are undeniable. In terms of numbers, there have been over 25,000 commendable good people and good deeds at the city level, together with about 350,000 good people and good deeds at the district level.

More than a thousand words of encouragement, the story of each simple “flower” in everyday life always moves people's hearts, arousing the desire to contribute more to the community and society. To illustrate, Ms. Phan Thi Binh (Quarter 22, Residential Area 2, Linh Dam Peninsula, Hoang Liet Ward, Hoang Mai District) along with her voluntary friends purchased an ambulance and organized charitable trips to transport patients for free from Hanoi to other provinces. Another example is teacher Le Thi Hoa (Dong Son Primary School, Chuong My district) with 26 years of giving classes, quietly giving love and knowledge to children with disabilities and mental retardation, helping them gradually overcome their inferiority complex and integrate into the community.

Notably, the "Good people and good deeds" movement among public officials and civil servants has been associated with other movements such as "Studying and following Ho Chi Minh's ideology, morality and style" and "Implementing culture at work and public places", thereby improving responsibility and ethics in the public service, as well as consolidating the people's trust in the Party and the government. Similarly, in association with such movements as "Building new countryside", "Integrating and developing enterprises in the Capital ", "Creative start-ups”, the "Good people and good deeds" movement in production has revealedmany examples of good workers who have put forth technical initiatives and outstanding contribution to economic development and social security.

For good deeds to be better

Over the years, the city has effectively launched and organized "The Writing Contest on praiseworthy examples of good people and good deeds", as well as set up a relevant thematic working group. Consequently, thousands of commendable collectives and individuals in all fields of social life have been discovered, recommended and awarded. The contest has attracted the participation of people from all strata and ages, from the elderly to teenagers, from cadres, civil servants to foreigners studying and working in the city, thus further spreading the movement.

Thousands of other quiet commendable examples, with simple everyday actions but full of love, are contributing to the completion of political tasks, socio-economic targets, national defense and security. The "Good people and good deeds" movement is really an effective way to "multiply the good and repel the bad", as positive examples have great persuasive power that will nurture the positive seed in every person – remarked Ms. Dang Thi Ngoc Thinh, Vice State President and First Vice President of the Central Council for Emulation and Commendation.
