Vietnam on track to reach 1 million enterprises in 2020

By the end of December 31, 2017, Vietnam has a total of 561,064 enterprises in operation, up 11.1% compared to 2016, according to the General Statistics Office (GSO)`s report.

Out of 63 provinces and cities, 19 provinces/cities have the growth rate of newly established enterprises higher than the national average number compared to the same period of 2016.

That said, Bac Giang currently tops the list with growth rate of 28%; followed by Thanh Hoa with 27.9%; Hung Yen with 26.4%; Ben Tre with 25.7%; Bac Ninh with 23.7%, and Vinh Phuc with 19.7%, informed the General Director of GSO, Nguyen Bich Lam at the press conference evaluating enterprises development in major cities in 2017 and period 2010 - 2016 on February 6.

2017 has set the all new record number of total newly established enterprises with 126,859, an increase of 15.2% compared to 2016. At the same time, around 26,448 enterprises resumed operation, a reduction of 0.9% over 2016. 

On the opposite way, in 2017, total number of suspended enterprises reached 21,684, increasing 8.9% compared to 2016, while the number of dissolved enterprises stood at 12,113, reducing 2.9% year-on-year. 

Notably, some provinces witnessed high growth rate of dissolved enterprises in 2017 compared to 2016, including: Hoa Binh with 587.1%; Tra Vinh with 296.3%; Lao Cai with 195%; Ben Tre with 164.6%; Nghe An with 155.4%; Thua Thien Hue with 100%; Dien Bien with 58.3%; and Bac Ninh with 34.7%.

There were a total of 505,067 operational enterprises as of December 31, 2016, according to the statistics, equaling a growth rate of 10.4% annually in period 2010 - 2016.

Analyzing in economic sectors, service has the largest number of operational enterprises, as well as the highest growth rate of enterprises among other fields. 

As of December 31, 2016, the number of enterprises operating in the service sector accounts for 354,244, in which for period 2010 - 2016 this sector experienced average growth rate of 11.5%. 

Coming in second place are industry and construction. As of December 31, 2016, this sector accounted for 146,376 operational enterprises, averaging annual growth rate of 8% in period 2010 - 2016. 

The agro, forestry and fishery sector has the least number of operational enterprises with 4,447 by the end of 2016, for which the average annual growth rate of 9.6% in period 2010 - 2016.

By the end of 2016, the number of operational state-owned enterprises (SOEs) was 2,663, indicating the annual average reduction of 3.4% in period 2010 - 2016; while the growth rate of private enterprises and foreign direct investment (FDI) were 10.5% and 11.6%, respectively. 

Around 20 out of 63 provinces/cities have the higher-than-average growth rate of established enterprises  in period 2010 - 2016, including Bac Ninh with 17.2%; Vinh Phuc with 15.7%; Ba Ria - Vung Tau with 15%; Hung Yen with 14.6% and Dac Nong with 14.5%. 

In the coming time, the government will step up efforts in administration reform, improving business conditions, legal framework, in turn creating favorable conditions to facilitate the establishment of new enterprises, said Lam. 

This is in line with the government's objective of having one million enterprises by 2020. 

At the same time, it is important to continue the SOEs restructuring process and attracting high quality FDI projects. In particular, the government should encourage and support the development of private sector. 

Last but not least, the Law on Support for Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) should be put into operation soon to timely support SMEs in the coming time, Lam concluded.
