Vietnam considers Japan as a leading important partner

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Pham Binh Minh affirmed the consistent policy of Vietnam that Vietnam continues to consider Japan as a leading and long-term important partner.

On May 5 afternoon, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh held talks with Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida on his official visit to Vietnam.

During their talks in Hanoi, the two sides expressed delight at stronger and more comprehensive development of the strategic partnership between Vietnam and Japan. Both Foreign Ministers have agreed to enhance political trust by keeping up with regular visits and dialogues, and upholding existing dialogue mechanisms.

They discussed measures to continue implementing results of the official visit to Japan by Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong last September. They also discussed making preparations for Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc to attend the expanded G7 Summit in Japan scheduled for later this month, and to hold talks with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. The two sides discussed regional and international issues of common concerns and agreed to enhance cooperation at multilateral forums.

Regarding the East Sea issue, the two sides agreed on the need to ensure peace and security in adherence with international law. Deputy PM and FM Minh affirmed Vietnam’s consistent policy of continuing to regard Japan as Vietnam’s leading and long-term partner.

Fumio Kishida said Japan attaches importance to and wishes to advance the strategic partnership with Vietnam and promises to support and coordinate with the country in UN peace-keeping operations as well as in bomb and mine clearance.

The two sides also exchanged views on international issues of mutual interest and areas; agree to enhance close cooperation in multilateral fora, especially the UN, ASEAN, APEC, ASEM; strengthen cooperation in international economic integration as Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), Partnership Agreement Trans-Pacific (TPP).

Minister Kishida vowed to closely cooperate with Vietnam in the preparation of the APEC Year 2017.
