The market will have 56 pavilions stretching 120m along Tran Quy Cap Street, with 43m on Bach Dang and another 10m on Hoang Van Thu Street. There are plans for an additional 40 stands to be installed along 130m of Tieu La Road in the future.
“The newly-launched night market will offer more shopping options for tourists at night, easing the crowding of tourists in the old quarter of the west side,” Vice chairman of Hoi An’s People’s Committee Nguyen Van Son was quoted as saying.
Hoi An now has three night markets, with the new addition and the two old markets of Nguyen Hoang, which sells souvenirs, and Con Nu Ngoc Hoa, which specialises in cuisine.
In 2017, Hoi An city welcomed more than 3.2 million tourists visited, a pickup of 21% against the year earlier. The 3.22 million visitors included 1.78 million foreigners and 1.44 million domestic visitors, according to the Quang Nam Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
In recent years, Hoi An has been touted as one of the visit-worthy travel destinations in the country and earned plaudits from popular foreign travel sites and the international community.
In 2012, it was shortlisted for the top ten Asian cities in the US magazine Conde Nast's Traveler's Readers Choice Awards. The following year, the UNESCO-recognised world heritage site was chosen for the Townscape Award by the UN-Habitat Regional Office in Asia.
