The event aims to encourage local sporting spirit and promote tourism.
Nearly a thousand runners from 47 countries will join the 2019 Vietnam Jungle Marathon, which is slated to take place on May 25 in Pu Luong Nature Reserve, Thanh Hoa province, Vietnam News Agency reported.
This is the third time this annual event is organized by Topas Travel Company. The event aims to encourage local sporting spirit and promote tourism. Accordingly, all runners will race in five routes, including the new race (10 km), jungle race (25 km), full marathon (42 km), and ultramarathon (55 km and 70 km).
Miss Vietnam 1994 Nguyen Thu Thuy will run in full marathon route (42 km), after four-month training. On the ultramarathon (70 km) Nguyen Tien Hung, crowned champion of the Vietnam Mountain Marathon 2018, will compete with prominent Hisashi Kitamura from Japan. Besides Nguyen Tien Hung and Hisashi Kitamura, prominent names such as Ander Iza Rekakoetxea from Spain, Tomohiro Mizukoshi from Japan, Julien Petit from France and David Longo from Australia also join the ultramarathon (70 km).
Unlike Sa Pa town in Lao Cai province and Moc Chau district in Son La province, Pu Luong has seen few domestic and foreign tourists. The organizing board has been working with residents of the finishing location, Ban Hang village, since 2017, and helped 30 households offer homestay services for visitors during the race. At this year’s event, Ban Hang village will welcome more than 300 visitors.
The location of Pu Luong Nature Reserve lies around 140km southwest of Hanoi. It is an area where time stands still. Pu Luong is home to ancient jungle, soaring limestone peaks, waterfalls, rivers, vibrant rice paddy fields and small villages where life goes on as it has for generations.
The organizing board selected this nature reserve because they wanted to add a jungle element to the rice terrace scenery and small minority village trails. They also wanted to add different trail challenges and to bring people to a new part of Vietnam.
