The Hanoi cultural department will hold the 2017 Calligraphy Writing Festival at the Literature Lake in Hanoi`s Temple of Literature from January 21 to February 11.
Calligraphy is considered an art that is appealing to all ages. In addition to senior calligraphers, many young ones with a passion for the art are qualified to write at the festival.
The 2017 Calligraphy Writing Festival, which will be organised at the Literature Lake at Temple of Literature, Hanoi from January 21 to February 11, will attract as many as 77 penmen.
Among them are renowned names such as Cung Khac Luoc, Nguyen The Anh, Nguyen The Luc, Nguyen Nhu Phach, and Nguyen Minh Chau, according to Vice Director of the Hanoi Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism Truong Minh Tien.
They include 67 calligraphers selected from previous festivals. The ten others were selected after evaluation by the organisers ahead of the festival.
This year's festival, calligraphers will set up in the yard in front of the Literature Lake.
Along with calligraphy, an exhibition featuring traditional trade villages and intangible cultural heritages and children’s drawing contest will be included in the festival.
These calligraphers will write from 8.30am to 8pm during the festival, except for January 28 – the Lunar New Year's Eve – at which time they will write until 2am the following day.
This is the second time the festival has been held at the Literature Lake instead of along the sidewalks outside the Temple to ensure order along the street and maintain the beauty of the monument.
Writing calligraphy is popular for local people during Tet. The festival aims to welcome the New Year and promote the Vietnamese tradition.
