Nearly half of the surveyed European enterprises said they would employ more Vietnamese workers in the time ahead, according to Joaquim Torrinha, Deputy Director of the European Chamber of Commerce in Vietnam (EuroCham).
EuroCham today released the Business Climate Index (BCI) for the fourth quarter of 2017, which is 77/100. The index is equal to the previous quarter, though drops 8 points against the same period in 2016. “However, it remains high,” said Joaquim Torrinha, Deputy Director of EuroCham.
Generally, European firms reported an optimistic year in Vietnam through the figures. Accordingly, 64% of businesses think that Vietnam is a good or excellent market to operate in, while 70% remain optimistic about business in Vietnam in the future.
During 2017, EuroCham’s members employed 120,000 people in Vietnam. Besides, “47% asked enterprises respond that they are going to employ more in the future, while 38% aims to maintain their labor force and only 15% considering cutting down their staff number,” Joaquim Torrinha added.
When it comes to investment, 50-60% of the companies are looking to expand their investment in Vietnam, especially in the manufacturing sector, cited Torrinha.
Last year also witnessed the two new headquarters of EuroCham being launched in Binh Duong and Haiphong. Additionally, the Chamber hosted numerous events to connect European enterprises operating in Vietnam as well as supporting them to do business effectively.
Next week on March 15, EuroCham will present the 10th edition of its Whitebook in Hanoi at its yearly event entitled “Whitebook Launch and EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement Outlook 2018.” The Whitebook is the Chamber’s landmark publication of trade and investment issues and recommendations.
The Whitebook Launch will be a unique discussion on trade and investment topics, with a focus on the role of the European business community in the Vietnamese economy. The event will count on the presence of Vietnamese ministers and other high-level officials, including the leaders of the Vietnamese Chamber of Commerce (VCCI) and the EU Ambassador to Vietnam, H.E. Bruno Angelet.
