According to Nguyen Hong Hai, director of Ha Giang Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, visitors attending the 2018 Buckwheat Festival will be treated to a range of activities including a photo exhibition on the Dong Van Karst Plateau Global Geopark, a re-enactment of the old market in Dong Van town, local honey production demonstration, and a flower road in Dong Van ancient town, Dong Van Karst Plateau cuisine, etc.
They will also visit the night market in Meo Vac district with folk music performances, a photo contest and a mountain climbing competition on Ma Pi Leng pass. Other districts in the province such as Quan Ba and Yen Minh will also hold festivities highlighting traditional crafts, cuisine and experiment tourism.
According to Vice Chairman of Ha Giang province People’s Committee Tran Duc Quy, the Buckwheat Festival, having been held since 2015, has contributed to the socio-economic development of the province. “This year’s festival will be the largest so far as the province will review four years of the program on tourism brand building for Dong Van Karst Plateau,” said Duc Quy.
The Buckwheat Festival in Ha Giang aims to protect the livelihoods of the ethnic people and promote tourism in the region. Buckwheat is cultivated for its grain-like seeds, which are used to make specialty food by ethnic minorities in the mountainous region.
The crop is often planted around September. From late October to early November carpets of buckwheat flowers are in full bloom, making for a spectacular sight. The hills and mountains are covered by the white and pink of the flowers.
