The Hanoi Department of Industry and Trade will promote communications for businesses in the fields of production and consumption, raise consumers’ awareness and join hands to combat plastic waste in the city.
Enterprises in Hanoi city should be determined to combat plastic waste in industrial production and consumer distribution, contributing to preventing the risk of plastic waste pollution which heavily affects the environment and human health.
Vice Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee Nguyen Doan Toan made the statement at the conference titled "Joining hands to combat plastic waste in the field of industrial production and consumer distribution" in Hanoi on June 28.
Toan stressed that preventing environmental pollution caused by plastic waste is now an urgent task that needs to be implemented regularly, with the participation of all sectors and the whole society.
In order to curb plastic waste emission, in the time ahead, the Hanoi Department of Industry and Trade will promote communications for businesses in the fields of production and consumption, raise consumers’ awareness and join hands to combat plastic waste in the city.
Enterprises will try their best so as not to produce disposable plastic products, especially not -decomposable plastic bags by 2025. 100% of trade centers and supermarkets are expected not to use these items by December 31, 2020.
Some enterprises such as supermarket system BigC, Lotte, Co.opMart, Co.opFood have taken action to combat plastic waste. They used self-destructive biological bags, wrapped vegetables with natural materials like banana leaves and paper bags to replace plastic bags and disposable plastic products.
According to the Hanoi Department of Industry and Trade’s report, every day, waste in the city amounts to 5,500-6,000 tons, of which plastic waste accounts for 8-10%. Plastic waste generated in industrial production and consumer distribution makes up a large portion.
Recently, Hanoi city has implemented a pilot program to classify, collect and recycle paper milk cans into safe ecological products at primary schools and preschools in Hoan Kiem district.
Besides, Hanoi also piloted the model titled "Green space – Low carbon" in some districts in the city. The city’s authority also subsidized the construction of children's playgrounds with equipment made from recycled plastic bottles and plastic bags, tires, among others.
