Exhibition on traditional Vietnamese wedding in Berlin

Photos of wedding customs are displayed at the exhibition titled Hanh Phuc Ngot Ngao

Entitled Hanh Phuc Ngot Ngao, meaning sweet happiness, the exhibition showcases 130 photos, with the oldest photo dating back to 1919.

The exhibition offers visitors a chance to learn about the wedding customs of the Northern, Central and Southern regions of Viet Nam. In addition, the weddings of different social classes can be seen in the images.

From lavish weddings of the upper class in the 1920s, the humble weddings of soldiers in the war during the 1960s, weddings of famous artists to those of farmers, all can be seen at the photo exhibition.

Initiated by Hoai Thu Loos, head of VinaPhunu, a non-governmental organisation which works to support Vietnamese women living in Germany, the exhibition also helps visitors to get a glimpse of the different historical periods of Viet Nam.

According to Loos, she and her partners spent three years collecting the photos for the exhibition.

The exhibition will run till the beginning of April, as part of the cultural activities to celebrate the Year of the Horse. It also includes performances of traditional art forms such as cheo or traditional opera, tuong or classical drama, cai luong or reformed opera and quan ho or love duet.
