First methadone-detoxification facility launched in Hoa Binh province

A methadone therapy treatment facility was launched on October 29 by the Hoa Binh Provincial Department of Health.

The Hanoitimes - A methadone therapy treatment facility was launched on October 29 by the Hoa Binh Provincial Department of Health.


This is the first methadone therapy treatment facility in the province with 15 patients who will be treated during the first phase.

Deputy Head of the Vietnam Administration of AIDS Control (VAAC) Pham Duc Manh said that the operation of the first methadone therapy treatment facility is successful in Hoa Binh province, bringing a new solution for drug users and help them improve health, their lives and gradually reintegrate into the community.

The facility is sponsored by the Government of Australia and the Government of the Netherlands through the HIV/AIDS Asia Regional Program (HAARP) in Vietnam, which helps Hoa Binh province reduce harmful effects of HIV/AIDS infection, including treatment to reduce addictive substances with methadone.

It is expected that by the end of 2012, the facility will receive and provide treatment for 50 drug users. The methadone therapy treatment facility is a channel to provide harm reduction intervention services, an official HIV transmission prevention of the HIV/AIDS prevention program in the province.

This event marked a turning point with new efforts of Hoa Binh province to restrict HIV transmission among drug users, especially in the current situation.

According to the Hoa Binh provincial HIV/AIDS prevention centre, as of September 30, 2012, the province has diagnosed 1,155 people living with HIV and the epidemic has spread to 100% of the districts and 70% of the communes, wards and towns of the province.
