The Hanoitimes - Typical Korean specialities served as the kick off the Korea Food Festival in Hanoi on June 25.

Jointly organized by the Embassy of the Republic of Korea to Vietnam, Korea Agro-Fisheries Trade Corporation and Star Korea Company, the event is part of the 20th anniversary celebrations of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Korea (1992 -2012).

During the three-day event, Vietnamese connoisseurs will have chance to sample several popular Korean foods such as kimbap (steamed white rice and various other ingredients, rolled in sheets of dried seaweed) and bibimbap (warm white rice topped with vegetable, chilli paste, a raw or fried egg and sliced beef) free of charge. The food will be prepared by Korean housewives who currently live in Hanoi .

In addition, more than 100 Korean packed food and agro-fishery products will be presented to the event's visitors.

Along with the food, local residents will also have the chance to enjoy performances featuring K-pop and the traditional samulnori – a genre of percussion music consisting of four traditional musical instruments.

They will also learn how to make kimchi or play some Korean traditional games, including the board game yutnori, and jegichagi – which requires the use of people's feet to pass jegi [similar the badminton shuttlecock] to other players, avoiding dropping the object on ground.

Offering local gastronomes the chance taste traditional dishes from Korea like gimchi (a traditional fermented Korean dish made of vegetables with a variety of seasonings), ginsengs, traditional wine, bibimbap (mixed rice)..., the festival will feature many culinary exchange activities including exhibitions and sales booths, outdoor activities with interesting games, drumming, lion dances, Vietnamese and Korean traditional martial arts demonstrations.

Hosted by the Korea Agro-Fisheries&Food Trade Corporation with the sponsorship of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Vietnam , the event aims to introduce and promote Korean cuisine in Vietnam .

The festival takes place at the Big C Thang Long Supermarket on Tran Duy Hung Street

Mr Kim Jae Soo, General Director of Korea Agro-Fisheries Trade Corporation said: “It is a really good opportunity for us to understand more about Vietnamese market. We can see a big potential market for export products from Korea. Therefore, Korean firms have been invested 2.6 million USD to fresh vegetables projects in Hai Duong and Hoa Binh provinces”.

Earlier, on June 1, the Hanoi-based Korea Agro-Fisheries Association has coordinated with the Vietnam’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Lam Dong provincial People’s Committee to organize a seminar for reviewing and analyzing advantages/disadvantages in agro-fisheries trading between the two nations in the last several years.
