The Hanoi mayor shared his feeling of honor and excitement when Hanoi and Singapore were both chosen as the venues for the US - North Korea summits.
Singapore and Hanoi have many opportunities to join hands on the construction of smart city, cultural exchanges as well as economic development cooperation and investment, said Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee Nguyen Duc Chung at a reception for Singaporean Ambassador to Vietnam Catherine Wong on February 26.
At the meeting, Singaporean Ambassador to Vietnam Catherine Wong congratulated Hanoi for being the venue for the second US - North Korea summit on February 27 and 28.
In addition, she expressed her belief that the second summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un will be a success, helping to strengthen the position of Hanoi as well as Vietnam in the world.
Discussing about cooperation issues, the ambassador expressed optimism on Hanoi's economic development potential as the city became the Vietnam's top FDI attraction in 2018. Singapore, as one of the biggest investors in Hanoi, expect its investors to expand their operations here in the coming time, Catherine Wong emphasized.
Hanoi is one of the members of ASEAN Smart Cities Network (ASCN), an initiative that Singapore launched last year as ASEAN chair. This is also one of Hanoi's development objectives. The ambassador affirmed that Singapore with experience and success in becoming a smart city is willing to share with Hanoi.
Next year, Hanoi will also host the Formula 1 (F1) race, like the event Singapore held in 2008. The Singaporean ambassador expects this will also be the area which the two sides can share experience.
According to the ambassador, Deputy Prime Minister of Singapore Teo Chee Hean will make an official visit to Vietnam from March 21 to 26. In Hanoi, besides the meeting with Vietnamese leaders, Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean will attend the opening ceremony of the Singapore Festival from March 23 to 24. This is expected to be a unique event, introducing to Hanoians the quintessence of Singaporean culture.
Thanking the Hanoi for supporting the preparation the Singapore Festival over the past time, the ambassador expects Hanoi authorities to continue cooperating to ensure the success of the event.
For his part, Chairman of Hanoi People’s Committee Nguyen Duc Chung appreciated the proposals of Singaporean Ambassador on promoting bilateral relations, including the Singapore Festival in Hanoi. In addition, he affirmed that the two sides’ expanded cultural exchange is a good opportunity for the people of both countries to further understand and build a foundation to improve the relationship between Vietnam and Singapore.
Vietnam’s capital is willing to join hands with the Singapore embassy in organizing this event, through facilitating logistics and security support, he pledged.
Chung also expected the respective business communities from two countries will carry out more exchanges in the field of tourism and health within the framework of the upcoming visit by the Deputy Prime Minister of Singapore to Vietnam.
Emphasizing that Singapore and Hanoi have many similarities, the Hanoi mayor said that the capital is actively cooperating with the greenery company of Singapore, and wishes to continue learning from Singapore to become an eco-city.
Agreeing with suggestions from the ambassador, Chung also wants to exchange more experiences towards smart city, building e-government from Singapore, through cooperation with leading technology public enterprises from that country.
He also shared his feeling of honor and excitement when Hanoi and Singapore were both chosen as the venues for the US - North Korea summits.
“This is an opportunity to promote the image before the international community, previously Singapore and now Hanoi, as well as an opportunity for us to contribute to peace in the world,” said Nguyen Duc Chung.
