Hanoi city is facing many challenges in improving air quality, Deputy Director of Hanoi Department of Natural Resources and Environment Le Tuan Dinh said in an interview with Kinh Te & Do Thi newspaper.
Dinh said that the main challenge comes from the accelerated pace of urbanization and the loosened control of construction sites that leads to local pollution, especially dust pollution.
Along with that, constructors are not complying with regulations on environmental protection. Vehicles carrying materials and waste are not covered or remained unwashed while circulating in the city. Meanwhile, pollution control encounters with the shortage of personnel to carry out inspection and fine the regulation offenders, Dinh added.
On the other hand, investment projects for environmental protection are not executed on time and environmental protection work fails to draw the participation from the private sector. Funding for environmental protection is insufficient and few ODA fund has been poured into this endeavor, Dinh stressed.
He said awareness of obeying of environmental laws in businesses and communities is not high, the majority of people are still indifferent to environmental protection.
Hanoi responds to World Environment Day
The theme of this year's World Environment Day is "Air pollution and our actions", to which Hanoi has organized many activities to respond.
The city has completed the program of planting one million trees in 2018 and continues to plant 600,000 trees in 2019-2020.
Besides, Hanoi’s authority encourages its residents to refrain from using personal vehicles, use the more environmental friendly E5 gasoline and enhance quality control of vehicles.
In addition, Hanoi has also implemented projects to improve air quality, such as noise and dust prevention projects; strengthening management of vehicles to reduce traffic congestion and environmental pollution in the period of 2017-2020, with the vision to 2030; treating hazardous medical waste; collecting and treating hazardous wastes and a number of international cooperation projects on improving air quality in Hanoi city.
Especially, on June 1, in response to the World Environment Day, Hanoi’s authority organized the "Clean Air, Green Hanoi" Day at Hoan Kiem Lake with many practical activities.
In the time ahead, Hanoi will continue to promote communication activities and raise public awareness about reducing air pollution.
