It is part of a series of events commemorating the 78th anniversary of Vietnam War Invalids and Martyrs Day (July 27, 1947 – 2025). The launching ceremony took place at the Co Loa Martyrs Cemetery in Dong Anh Commune.

The campaign blends environmental action with a sense of national gratitude, reflecting the enduring Vietnamese tradition of uong nuoc nho nguon ("When drinking water, remember its source").

Dang Thi Phuong Hoa, Vice President of the Hanoi Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee, emphasized the program's cultural and moral importance, noting that "Green Weekend" is a powerful expression of respect and remembrance for the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the Fatherland's independence, as well as a drive to preserve a green, clean, and beautiful environment.

Numerous local organizations have enthusiastically participated in the program, including the Youth Union, Veterans Association, Women’s Union, and community residents. Activities are set to unfold in 126 communes, wards, and towns across Hanoi throughout July.

Candlelight vigils are scheduled for the evening of July 26 at martyrs' cemeteries citywide.

At the launching ceremony on July 20, leaders and young people of Duong Noi Ward actively responded to the program, participating in activities to beautify the local cemetery.

Tran Thanh Hien, Deputy Head of the Residential Group No.1, Duong Noi Ward, Hanoi told The Hanoi Times that: “I’m honored to have taken part in the cleanup of Duong Noi Ward Martyrs’ Cemetery – a meaningful event that encourages the community and younger generation to remember and pay tribute to our local heroes.”

During the cleanup, Hien joined members of the youth union, women’s union, and veterans' association to pull weeds around the graves, carefully clean each one, replace the flags, and light incense in tribute.

Over 150 participants gather at Co Loa Martyrs Cemetery on July 20 for a mass environmental cleanup effort.

The program begins with an incense offering ceremony.
