Hanoi invests heavily to address urban flooding

In addition to improving the city's overall stormwater drainage system, the project aims to mitigate local flooding, improve the environment, and increase discharge capacity.

THE HANOI TIMES — Hanoi has approved a project costing VND383 billion (US$15 million) to address localized inundation in several areas of the central city.

The project aligns with the revised Hanoi Master Plan through 2045 and its vision for 2065. It involves constructing drainage pipelines and pumping stations in accordance with existing plans and conditions, with a focus on the streets of Tong Dan, Dinh Tien Hoang, 155 Phung Hung, Quan Nhan, Cu Loc, and Nguyen Trai, as well as certain pump stations at nearby lakes.

It aims to reduce localized inundation, improve the environment, and enhance drainage capacity in the targeted areas, contributing to the gradual completion of the city’s overall stormwater drainage system.

Construction will take place in several wards, including Hai Ba Trung, Van Mieu–Quoc Tu Giam, Dong Da, Thanh Xuan, Hoan Kiem, and Cua Nam, as well as along major thoroughfares such as Ly Thai To, Phan Chu Trinh, Le Lai, Quang Trung, Quan Su, and Nguyen Trai.

The central reservoir system will be upgraded under the project by improving existing pump stations and substations and installing new ones at Thien Quang, Bay Mau, Ba Mau, Linh Quang, Van Chuong, and Trung Tu lakes.

Drainage infrastructure will be built along the streets of Tong Dan, Dinh Tien Hoang, Quang Trung, Quan Su, and Nguyen Trai to prevent flooding.

The project is classified as a category I technical infrastructure project under group B and is designed for a minimum lifespan of 50 years. It is scheduled to be executed from 2025 to 2026.
