Hanoi's tree planting campaign has significantly mitigated urban heat and contributed to improving the living environment of local residents over the past few years.
Hanoi plans to grow around 554,000 trees in 2021, according to a report of the municipal Department of Construction.
The report stated that 23,850 trees have been planted in the city in the first quarter of this year.
The new trees will be planted at historical and cultural relics, new urban buildings, public works, schools, hospitals, parks and along roads.
The municipal People's Committee assigned the Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to find reliable suppliers of seedlings and technical materials to ensure the correct variety, quality and planting and tending techniques.
The Hanoi Department of Construction in coordination with People's Committees of urban districts and Son Tay town will deploy the plan in accordance with the Hanoi government’s instruction.

Deputy Director of the municipal Department of Construction Hoang Cao Thang said that in 2021, the city will focus on plating shrubs, selecting trees varieties in accordance with environmental functions and urban aesthetic requirements.
In anticipation of the upcoming storm season, the department has prepared a plan to deal with incidents of rotten and fallen trees, Thang noted.
He added that the work of planting and renovating the urban greenery system has basically completed, starting from the survey, design, planning, approval and execution.
Thang also urged the People's Committees of districts and towns to inspect and supervise the tree caring work in their localities.
Greenery development has been Hanoi’s priority policy to improve micro-climate, architectural space and urban landscape.
The city continues to focus on managing, caring and pruning trees to ensure safety in the storm season and create beautiful landscapes.
From 2016 to 2018, Hanoi city rolled out the million-tree planting program under which, trees and flowers have been grown on the sidewalks.
As the result, the city's vegetation has significantly mitigated urban heat and contributed to improving the living environment of local residents. One million trees were planted in the period, two years ahead of the schedule.
In 2019-2020, another 600,000 trees were grown.
According to environmental experts, more trees in the capital city not only make Hanoi greener and refresh the air, but also contribute to shading the streets, preventing sunlight, curbing the harmful effects of radiation on people, especially in hot days.
