Hanoi streets submerged after heavy rains

Hanoi is among many localities in northern and north-central Vietnam affected by Typhoon Bualoi, which brought wind force of level 12 with gusts up to level 15.

THE HANOI TIMES — Numerous streets in Hanoi remained flooded on the afternoon of September 30 as heavy rain and rising water from Hoan Kiem Lake overwhelmed the city’s drainage system. Some intersections saw water levels nearly one meter deep, disrupting traffic across the inner city.

Streets affected include Thai Ha, Le Duan, Truong Chinh, Ton That Tung, Nguyen Trai, Lieu Giai, Xuan Thuy, Ho Tung Mau, and Le Duc Tho, with water depths ranging from 30–40cm in most areas.

Rainfall record: Since 1:00 PM, rainfall reached 319.6mm in O Cho Dua Ward, 310.5mm in Vinh Thanh Commune, 195mm in Hai Ba Trung, 190mm in Tay Ho, and 165mm in Thanh Xuan. A total of 65 flooded spots were recorded citywide, according to the Hanoi Drainage One Member Limited Liability Company.

Authorities’ response: Workers have been deployed to the deepest flooded locations with warning signs to support residents. Hanoi officials advise people to monitor weather updates and avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rain.
