Hanoi runs pumping stations at full capacity to ease flooding after heavy rains
Authorities deployed emergency crews and ran major pumping stations nonstop to cope with severe flooding caused by record rainfall across Hanoi.
THE HANOI TIMES — Hanoi operated all major pumping stations at full capacity on September 30 to relieve widespread flooding caused by heavy rains triggered by Typhoon Bualoi’s circulation.
Between 11 AM. and 1 PM, rainfall exceeded 150 millimeters in many parts of the capital, with some locations recording extreme levels such as 319.6 mm in O Cho Dua Ward and 195.3 mm in Hai Ba Trung Ward.
The downpour pushed water levels in rivers and lakes sharply higher, including 6.11 meters at To Lich River and 7.92 meters at Hoan Kiem Lake.
The storm left many areas under deep water, disrupting traffic and stranding vehicles. Severe flooding was reported in Phu Xa, Vo Chi Cong near the UDIC Building, Resco urban area, Duong Dinh Nghe–Nam Trung Yen, Bui Xuong Trach, Vuong Thua Vu, Nguyen Trai near the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, and Thuy Khue near Chu Van An High School.
Other streets, including Nguyen Khuyen, Le Trong Tan, Thai Ha, Nguyen Xien, To Huu, Huynh Thuc Khang, and parts of Dien Bien Phu, also experienced significant waterlogging, making travel hazardous.
To address the situation, the Hanoi Sewerage and Drainage Company deployed staff to key flood-prone areas and operated all pumping stations at maximum capacity, including Yen So (20/20 pumps in use), Cau Buou, Dong Bong 1 and 2, Co Nhue, and Da Sy.
The goal was to rapidly lower water levels and ensure safe traffic flow in low-lying areas.
By 5 PM, rainfall continued across the city, with drainage teams still on standby, cleaning clogged drains and operating pumping stations according to procedures.
The company said it would continue to monitor weather developments closely and adjust operations to maintain effective drainage and urban safety.
