In the period of 2016-2018, the rate of poor households in Hanoi city fell to 1.16%, with 52,000 poor households having escaped poverty.
There will be no poor household in Hanoi by the end of 2019, thanks to the city’s poverty-eradicating policies, Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee Nguyen Duc Chung said at a meeting on August 20.
Chung affirmed that poor households and people with difficult circumstances are always the focus of Hanoi’s social policies.
To fulfill the above-mentioned goal by the end of 2019, Chung requested localities to apply the models of poverty reduction effectively in accordance with the local particularity and the needs of each poor household, as well as integrate them into the new-style rural construction program.
The people's committees of districts, towns and cities should regularly inspect poor households' living conditions to give timely support, Chung said, adding that solutions and policies to support sustainable poverty reduction should be implemented in parallel with the new-style rural area construction program.
At the meeting, Director of the Hanoi Department of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs Khuat Van Thanh said under the National Target Program on Sustainable Poverty Reduction, Hanoi has supported house reparation and construction for more than 4,000 poor households, at a cost of more than VND420 billion (US$18.06 million).
Hanoi's poverty rate was 5.72% in 2008 and fell to 1.16% in the period of 2016-2018, with 52,000 poor households having escaped poverty, thus the goal of reducing poverty was fulfilled two years ahead of the plan, Thanh added.
