According to Deputy Director of the Hanoi Department of Natural Resources and Environment Le Tuan Dinh, Hanoi is Vietnam’s first city to carry out a GHG inventory, focusing on two fields namely waste and energy.

For gas emissions, it is estimated that by 2020, Hanoi’s average discharge is 4.053 million tons of CO2 per year. For energy, GHG emissions across the capital are forecast to increase to 18.2 million tons of CO2 by 2020 and 42.7 million tons by 2030, Dinh noted.

Currently, Hanoi has taken measures to improve its forecasting ability and effectively responded to climate change to mitigate natural disasters’ damage.

Besides, the city effectively implemented activities to raise people’s awareness about climate change response, which is included in the capital’s socio-economic development strategies and plans, reducing GHG emissions by 8 - 10% compared to in 2010.

In terms of environmental protection, 25 facilities which were identified as the major sources of pollution have been treated. The city has collected and treated 90% of hazardous waste, 100% of medical waste, 98% of solid waste in 12 urban districts, and increased the area of urban greenery to 10-12m2 per person.

Dinh said that the city will implement more environmental projects, maintain the existing 104 lakes and build more wastewater treatment plants. Hanoi strives to attain the goal of treating most of wastewater in urban districts by 2019, to improve the water in To Lich and Nhue rivers.

Dinh added that Hanoi will build and effectively operate waste incineration plants, achieve the goal of planting one million trees, propose solutions to manage GHG emissions in the city.

By 2020, Hanoi strives to install and operate 38 air monitoring stations according to the approved plan to assess the city’s air quality, propose solutions to improve air quality, Dinh stressed.
