According to Le Tuan Dinh, Deputy Director of the Hanoi Department of Natural Resources and Environment, the results of inspections and examinations in 2017 showed that the number of establishments investing in the construction of wastewater treatment systems is still low. Compliance with regulations on environmental protection in some inspected establishments has not been regular and serious. In addition, some enterprises discharge wastewater in excess of the permitted standards, improperly carrying out the contents of environmental legal dossiers.
After inspecting 2,161 establishments, the Department uncovered pollution at 588 establishments, the mitigation of which cost a total VND16.5 billion for the State.

In 2017, the Hanoi Department of Natural Resources and Environment has reviewed, checked, and identified the "black spots" of environmental pollution in the city. Throughout the review at 21out of 30 districts and towns, 187 "black spots" have been identified, including Nhue River, Day River, and To Lich River. In 2018, the Department will assess in detail the level of environmental pollution at these "black spots” to develop a roadmap and appropriate measures to deal with pollution in these areas.
The city has also carried out work to reduce environmental pollution of lakes by releasing Redoxy 3C in 86 lakes in the inner city and 44 lakes in the suburbs, installed aquariums at 49 lakes and aeration at 30 lakes, and dredged 6 lakes (Ngoc Lam Park, Cau Tinh, Kim Lien, Truc Bach) to maintain their quality. Moreover, the West Lake will also be dredged to reduce the amount of sludge and increase the water’s oxygen content for aquatic ecosystems.
The Hanoi Department of Natural Resources and Environment also launched the campaign "No fields burning straw" piloted in Tho Xuan commune, Dan Phuong district by the direct trial of microbiological treatment for straw in the field to create organic fertilizer, which achieved high results. At the same time, the Department is deploying a program to to replace charcoal stoves in Ba Dinh district.
