The Hanoi mayor has been on a working trip to Europe with many cooperation gates being opened.
During his Europe working tour, Hanoi Mayor Nguyen Duc Chung on June 20 (local time) along with a city delegation paid a visit to Frankfurt Mayor Peter Feldmann.
At the meeting, the Hanoi mayor highlighted economic performance of Frankfurt, affirming his belief that the city would soon become a financial hub of Germany and Europe. He also briefed about Hanoi development as well as suggested the two cities boost partnership in some potential cooperation areas including tourism, urban planning, human resources or technology transfer.
To do so, the two sides should increasingly exchange cultural delegations, hold trade promotion conference, paving the way for signing brotherhood between Hanoi and Frankfurt, proposed Chung.
The Hanoi leader also invited Peter Feldmann to visit Hanoi, an invitation the counterpart accepted.
For his part, Feldmann said he was impressed with Hanoi social and economic achievements and supported Chung’s proposals.
He also suggested the two sides study the key cooperation’s contents and soon sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to materialize these contents. The German official also expected that the agreement on the two cities' brotherhood would be inked during his trip to Hanoi.
On the same day, Chung met with President of the Frankfurt Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FCCI) Stefan Messer. Both sides consented to hold an investment promotion conference to connect businesses from Germany and Hanoi in Frankfurt in the first quarter of 2019. The event will be organized by the FCCI, German Business Association and German Industry and Commerce Vietnam.
Earlier, the Hanoi mayor visited the Frankfurt Book Fair’s headquarters where he was received by Vice President of the fair Claudia Kaiser. Chung thanked Kaiser for sharing with Hanoi experience in personnel training and event planning for large book fairs and voiced his hope for the capital city to sign an agreement for cooperation with the fair.
Also within the Frankfurt’s visit, Mayor Chung took a field trip to FES waste-to-energy plant which is funded with EUR260 million and has a 10,000-ton-of-waste storehouse. The facility is capable of daily treating 1,500 tons of waste collected from Frankfurt and five neighboring cities. Chung expressed to FES’s CEO Benjamin Scheffler his expectation to apply the model in Hanoi.
The Hanoi mayor also invited Benjamin Scheffler to visit Hanoi in October, when the city holds a series of friendship events to accelerate the cooperation agreed between Hanoi and German localities.

The Hanoi leader introduced three breakthrough phases the city is aiming at, namely infrastructure investment, administration reform and high-quality resources training. On those foundations, Chung proposed both sides increasingly exchang delegations to learn experiences from each other, especially on urban planning, public education, urban railway, SME development, etc.
Appraising the economic performance of Hanoi, the Deputy Mayor of Munich hailed the potentials in bilateral cooperation, affirming that he will direct foreign affair agencies to study and build specific cooperation contents that soon come into reality.
On the same day, the Hanoi high-ranking delegation led by Mayor Chung took a field trip to the center of traffic equipment, administration and solutions of Siemens group in Munich, where they were hosted by Markus Schlitt – the center’s director along with his partners.
Within the trip, Markus Schlitt updated about the most advanced traffic light system that was studied and developed by Siemens group with great economical electricity consumption of one Watt for one light post. The Hanoi delegation also approached solutions for smart traffic management like Smart Guard, which has been applied by about 50 cities across the world.
The delegation then paid a working trip to Siemens’ headquarters in Munich, where they were received by Roland Busch – Vice Chairman of the firm and his associates.
Via dicussions, the Hanoi delegation came to five cooperation priorities with Siemens in the future, namely (1) traffic vehicle management and congestion reduction; (2) healthcare solutions; (3) e-governance and smart city construction; (4) energy, electricity consumption and (5) railway management.
