Over 300 traffic accidents occurred in Hanoi city from December 16, 2018 to March 15, 2019, leaving 134 people dead and 206 others injured, Vice Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee Nguyen Quoc Hung said, citing the report of the Hanoi Traffic Safety Committee.

The report showed a decrease in the number of accidents with 17 cases less, down 5.2% year-on-year, but with five more deaths, up 3.8%, and 21 injuries fewer, a 9.2% decrease year-on-year, according to Hung.
Compared with the previous quarter, there was a reduction of 68 cases (18.1%), 25 deaths (15.7%) and 65 injured victims (23.9%).
He also noted that the majority of traffic accidents in the city involved cars with 178 cases, accounting for 57.6%; of which, 87 accidents involved trucks and tourist cars, two cases were caused by passenger cars, and one case by taxi. Meanwhile, motorcycles were related to 118 accidents, equivalent to 38.1%.
In the first quarter of 2019, Hanoi’s police handled 67,565 cases of traffic violations, with administrative fines of more than VND25.7 billion (US$1.1 million). Through traffic surveillance cameras, the police punished 357 drivers for traffic infringements.
Hanoi police also fined a total of over VND5.7 billion (US$245,100) to 34,327 drivers for not wearing helmet, only from March 5 to 26.
The Hanoi mobile police forces also handled 3,322 cases of traffic law violations, with administrative sanctions on the spot for 3,262 cases and administrative fines of more than VND489million (US$21,027).
The Inspectorate of the Hanoi Department of Transport also dealt with a record of administrative violations for 1,585 cases, with a fine of VND4.6 billion (US$197,800), seizing 166 driving licenses and 20 vehicles.
