HCMCYU kick offs a campaign to clean the sea nationwide
The campaign to clean the sea in 28 coastal provinces across the country, which was piloted in four central coastal provinces of Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Tri and Thua Thien-Hue, will be deployed from June 2016 to June 2019.
The Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union (HCMCYU) and Vietnam Television (VTV) held a ceremony to launch a campaign to clean the sea at the national level on Sam Son beach in the north-central province of Thanh Hoa on June 19.
According to the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union, the campaign will be carried out from June 2016 to June 2019. It was piloted in four central coastal provinces of Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Tri and Thua Thien-Hue, and produced positive results.
First Secretary of the HCMCYU Central Committee Le Quoc Phong said that the campaign aims to raise public awareness of cleaning the sea and preserving the maritime environment.
Responding to the launching ceremony, around 28,000 youths, volunteer students and soldiers in 28 coastal provinces and cities joined in collecting garbage on beaches.
Earlier, on June 18, a concert featuring more than 50 renowned artists also took place on Sam Son beach to call on the community to participating in cleaning the sea.
The concert was also organised at Phu Quoc Island of the Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang on June 18. The music event aims to convey messages on environmental issues to the public through the voices of artists and celebrities.
It brought to the audience documentaries in Vietnam, the United States and the Philippines, telling the alarming truth of ocean garbage dump and its impacts on people’s life.
The concert will be organised quarterly as part of the second stage of the campaign “Hay lam sach bien” (Let’s clean up the ocean) initiated by the Vietnam National Television’s VTV24 News Centre in partnership with the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union Central Committee.
The campaign was first launched in four central provinces, including Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Tri and Thua Thien-Hue, in early May this year to raise public awareness on environment protection and climate change and call on local residents to together join in beach cleanup activities.
The campaign also provided financial support to fishermen living under difficult circumstances.
