Work on the expansion of National Highway No. 1, CanTho-Phung Hiep section, began in the Southern city of Can Tho on August 2.
The VND1.8 trillion (US$86 million) project is expected to be completed by the end of 2015.
The section will be 20 metre wide with four lanes reserved for motorised vehicles and two lanes for non-motorised vehicles.
Addressing the launching ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai valued the project as contributing to realizing Highway No. 1 upgrade and expansion by 2020.
He spoke highly of the project’s Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) investment model at a time when the state budget is limited.
Deputy PM Hai asked the Ministry of Transportation to monitor closely the project’s progress to ensure its schedule, quality, safety and environmental protection.
He also urged local authorities and residents to support site clearance work and ensure material supply for the project.
