IPU-132 - Good lessons have been learned from Vietnam

The 132nd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU-132) and its related meetings came to an end on the evening of April 1 with the adoption of the Hanoi Declaration.

National Assembly (NA) Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung who is President of  IPU-132, said the IPU-132’s theme “Sustainable Development Goals: Turning words into action” won approval from delegates. Participants offered constructive feedback on draft resolutions for ratification, raising a highly-influential voice in the world community.
The assembly also offered lessons to the Vietnamese NA on building laws, monitoring and deciding on key country issues in which citizens always play the central role, he added, and vowed that the Vietnamese legislature would take prompt actions to carry out the IPU resolutions and align policies and laws with the United Nations Millennium Development Goals.
The NA Chairman said the success of the IPU-132 - the biggest diplomatic event ever hosted by Vietnam - produced very good results and helped elevate Vietnam’s international profile. The Union passed a number of important documents, especially the Hanoi Declaration, Hung noted.
IPU President Saber Chowdhury said expectations in terms of content have been met during the five-day meeting.
Chowdhury highlighted the IPU's new approach that focused on a solution for issues rather than defining it. With each resolution adopted, parliamentarians, as representatives of the people, wished to transform lives of people worldwide. Good lessons have been learned from Vietnam, he said while extolling the country’s great efforts in making thorough preparations for the international parliamentary event.
According to the IPU President, the IPU-132 took a different approach to settling issues, focusing on developing solutions in the hope of improving citizen well-being. He said the host played an important role in the agenda from preparations, discussions in sessions to sidelines events.
Running from March 28 to April 1, IPU-132 Assembly  covered 70 sessions, with a focus on cyber warfare, gender equality, health care for women and children, sustainable development, combating threat of terrorism, and water governance among others. The IPU-132 brought together over 160 participating international delegations, including those from IPU member parliaments, associate members, and foreign organisations
