Japan helps Vietnam effectively protect environment

Although Vietnam has achieved encouraging economic results, the country still faces environmental pollution as a result of its development.

Vietnam-Japan cooperation has achieved many important results, contributing positively to environmental protection in Vietnam, a Vietnamese government official has said.

Vietnam's Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Vo Tuan Nhan made the statement at the workshop on "International environmental cooperation for pollution prevention" jointly hosted by Vietnam and Japan’s ministries responsible for environment in Hanoi on January 11.

The two ministries have worked together in the fields of environment, climate change, which have been materialized through the annual Vietnam-Japan Environment Policy Dialogue, Nhan said.

He added that the workshop is an opportunity for officials and experts to discuss prevention and control technology for environmental protection. Especially, this is also an opportunity for Japanese and Vietnamese enterprises to share their experiences, build relationships and promote enterprise cooperation in the time ahead.

Nhan noted that Vietnam is in the period of rapid and strong economic development. Although Vietnam has achieved encouraging economic results, the country still faces environmental pollution as a result of its development.

The deputy minister hopes Japanese expertise  and technology would help Vietnam draw an appropriate and  suitable roadmap in environmental protection.

For his part, Japanese Deputy Minister of Environment Takaaki Katsumata said that the rapid economic growth in Japan in the 1960s caused great pressure on the environment but with timely measures, the Japanese government successfully controlled environmental pollution.

Currently, Deputy Minister Takaaki Katsumata said, Japan has been one of the most successful nations in solving and controlling environmental pollution, and has many advanced technologies and models to handle and control its environmental quality.

“Japan has encountered many difficulties in preventing environmental pollution and has gradually dealt with each issue. We are always willing to share with Vietnam our experience and technology, with the hope that there will be more activities for technology cooperation between Vietnamese and Japanese enterprises,” said Takaaki Katsumata.

Japan hopes to listen to Vietnam's needs and work together to resolve them. That Vietnam overcomes environmental issues and gains sustainable development is a very important contribution to the development and stability of the whole region, Takaaki Katsumata emphasized.

Especially, at the workshop, Director of Japan’s Industrial Environmental Management Association Kayo Ohno presented and disseminated the program "System of pollution control staff and environmental human resource development".

“It can be said that the program is our greatest achievement and is the basis for us to ensure that the legal regulations are strictly followed and environment is protected in a sustainable way,” Kayo Ohno affirmed.

“Vietnam is facing many environmental issues such as managing and treating waste, global warming, ocean waste, especially plastic waste. Japan has a lot of advanced technologies that can be applied to handle them. And Japan also wants to strengthen the relationship and cooperation with Vietnam in the field of environment,” Kayo Ohno told Hanoitimes.
