Japanese PM to visit Vietnam: Stepping up security, trade cooperation
The official visit to Vietnam from January 16-17 by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is to enhance cooperation in the context of the international situation and the current region, while promoting trade cooperation with Vietnam, especially in the realization of the Agreement on Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP).
Japanese PM Shinzo Abe’s official visit to Vietnam manifests his respect to the two nations’ Extensive Strategic Partnership relations, affirming their crucial and long-term relationship. The Japanese and his spouse have started their official visit to Vietnam from January 16-17 at the invitation of Vietnamese PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc.
Earlier, the two PMs held talks on May 28, 2016 in Tokyo, Japan on the sidelines of the Vietnamese leader’s visit to Japan to attend the G7 Summit Japan 2016. They assented specific measures and orientations to promote Vietnam-Japan Extensive Strategic Partnership relations more comprehensively and effectively in the future.
They agreed to strengthen political trust through maintaining high-ranking visits and exchanges, enhance meetings on the sidelines of international forums, increase the effectiveness of dialogue mechanisms as well as strengthen the two sides’ defense and security and coordinate in the United Nations peace-keeping activities and overcome consequences after the war.
The two leaders consented to exchange ways to connect the two economies with contents of economic development strategies and human resource connection through investment, trade and Official Development Assistance cooperation.
The two sides approved to accelerate Japan’s investment in Vietnam by launching the sixth phase of the Vietnam-Japan Joint Initiative in 2016, affirming to close cooperate in realizing the Viet Nam's industrialization strategy within Vietnam - Japan cooperation framework to 2020, vision to 2030 and boosting the rate of progress of large-scaled infrastructure projects. They exchanged issues of international and regional concerns. PM Abe confirmed to coordinate with Vietnam to prepare for APEC Vietnam 2017.
Vietnamese Ambassador to Japan Nguyen Quoc Cuong has described the upcoming Vietnam visit by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe as a good start for an eventful year in bilateral relations. Cuong said it will be the second visit by Abe following the first trip to Vietnam since he took office again in 2012.
As scheduled, Abe will hold talks with Vietnam’s top leaders to discuss cooperation orientations between the two nations amid changes in the region and the world. According to the diplomat, the Japanese PM will be accompanied by businesses representatives who will attend a business forum and meet leaders of localities to enhance economic ties from the central to local levels.
One week after the visit, Vietnam is due to welcome a delegation of 100 Japanese leading businesses – a programme organised by the Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Japanese enterprises have highly evaluated the Vietnamese Government’s efforts to build a clean-fingered, tectonic and action-oriented government, he stressed.
Reviewing Vietnam – Japan relations, Cuong said 2016 was a year of effective, comprehensive and strong development of bilateral ties, evidenced by increasingly strengthened political trust and high-level meetings and contact, as well as regular economic activities. Japan continued to pledge a large amount of official development assistance (ODA) to Vietnam and boosted cooperation in new spheres such as the supporting industry and high-quality agriculture, he stressed.
