Most offline cyber-attacks in Southeast Asia target Vietnam

Cybersecurity firm Kaspersky Security recently said that the company had found nearly 100 million offline threats for Vietnamese users.

Vietnam suffered the majority of offline cyber-attacks in Southeast Asia and the 30th mostly hit in the world in the second quarter of 2019, local media reported.

These threats are posed by malicious codes spreading via USB, CD, DVD and other offline methods when users are not connected to the Internet.

Also in the second quarter, Kaspersky detected nearly 20 million online network incidents, equivalent to 27.7% of users in Vietnam at risk of being attacked from the Internet. Browser-based attacks are a common method used by cyber-criminals to spread malicious codes when people are online.

Yeo Siang Tiong, general director of Kaspersky in Southeast Asia, said the number of both online and offline attacks in Vietnam in the second quarter of 2019 declined, largely thanks to the attention paid by the Vietnamese government to network security.

This is also a prerequisite for Vietnam to succeed in the goal of digital transformation. The actions taken in 2019 may help improve network security in Vietnam in the future, he added.

Yeo Siang Tiong appreciated the Vietnamese government's initiatives to promote network security protection, but at the moment, Vietnam still tops the region in terms of offline threats (which come from people).

Local companies and organizations should improve people’s awareness on network attacks through courses on network security, Yeo Siang Tiong stressed.
