The United Nations (UN) has truly become a symbol of global solidarity, which crystallizes the values of human progress and realizes the aspirations for a world with peace, prosperity and justice.
Peace, freedom and prosperity are always the aspirations of all peoples. In the era of the Industrial Revolution 4.0, human progress is not only measured by technology achievements, but first of all by peace and prosperity, thus nations must grab every opportunity for peace.
Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc made the statement at the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly on September 28 (Vietnam time), according to the government portal.
PM Phuc said that Vietnam is one of the few nations that have fulfilled many targets in the UN’s millennium development goal 2015 (MDG 2015), especially poverty reduction.
Vietnam is consistently promoting the UN’s Charter, the fundamental principles in international law on resolving international disputes through peaceful means, including the South China Sea (East Sea), the PM added.
Vietnam is striving for equity and sustainable development, promoting equality and supporting disadvantaged groups, environmental protection, ensuring the rights of all people, while promoting the spirit of dialogue and cooperation on human rights, Phuc stressed.
He added that the world is moving rapidly with strong momentum from the great advances in science and technology in the Industrial Revolution 4.0 and the spread of the inevitable globalization trend. This opens up new opportunities for humanity to enter a stage of unprecedented economic growth that has contributed to strengthening the global trend of peace, cooperation and development.
The PM pointed out that no nation, regardless of powerful nations or not, is capable of addressing the great challenges facing the world today, which requires the efforts of all nations on the planet.
He proposed the 'dual responsibility', each nation needs more responsibility for global issues, each individual needs a global citizen role. The UN General Assembly should be the center for nations and peoples to cooperate for peace, justice and sustainable development.
The Vietnamese government’s leader asked the UN to boost cooperation with other regions, strengthen the UN and ASEAN cooperation mechanism towards strengthening the role of the UN in ASEAN nations and deepening ASEAN nations' role in the UN.
On this occasion, PM Phuc thanked the 53 Asia-Pacific countries for agreeing to nominate Vietnam as the only candidate for the UN Security Council Standing Committee for the 2020-2021 term and other nations’ strong support for Vietnam.
The PM suggested and expressed his wish to receive the support of all UN member nations, affirming that Vietnam commits to be an active and responsible member in the international community and the United Nations.
