Overseas delegates representing 4.5 million Vietnamese living abroad attend the 2019 Xuan Que Huong (2019).
On January 26, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, President Nguyen Phu Trong with his wife and overseas Vietnamese delegates release carps at Hoan Kiem Lake.
The delegates represent 4.5 million Vietnamese living across the world at the 2019 Xuan Que Huong (the 2019 Homeland Spring).
Releasing carps is believed to give Ong Cong – Ong Tao (Land Genie and the Kitchen Gods) a carp ride to heaven to deliver an annual report on the household’s activities to the God of Heaven. Releasing carps is one of the most sacred and meaningful annual rituals that officially starts the traditional Tet (Lunar New Year) festival.
After carying out the ritual of releasing carps, Party General Secretary, President Nguyen Phu Trong had a friendly conversation and enquired after the situation of life, work and business of overseas Vietnamese; he encouraged them to always be united, strive to overcome difficulties, integrate into local society, while preserving the national cultural identity, always towards the homeland and the country.
On this occasion, Party General Secretary, President Nguyen Phu Trong conveyed the best wishes to all the overseas Vietnamese and their families.
Earlier, President Nguyen Phu Trong and the overseas Vietnamese delegation attended the 2019 Homeland Spring event, offered incense at the monument of Ly Thai To statue and Ngoc Son temple.
“Homeland Spring” is an annual program organized by the State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese Affairs under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The annual event, which was first organized in 2008, aims to provide a platform for overseas Vietnamese to share their aspirations and thoughts and honor those who have contributed to the homeland’s development.
There are approximately 4.5 million Vietnamese living and working in 103 countries and territories worldwide. They form an indispensable part of the nation and play an important role in intensifying friendship and cooperation between Vietnam and the rest of the world.
