Perth fashion show marks 50 years of Vietnam-Australia ties

Ao dai fashion show is in the spotlight of the celebration ceremony.

Two of the latest collections of designer Tran Phuong Hoa were showcased at the Lotus Light Fashion Show at Winthrop Hall, University of Western Australia, Perth, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Australia.

The catwalk was hosted by the Consulate General of Vietnam in Perth, Eleven S Company, and Vietnam Television.

The two collections are inspired by the nature, lifestyle and culture of Vietnam and Australia, with a variety of cuts and colors, such as the lotus flower - the national flower symbolizing the Vietnamese people.

Ao dai, or traditional long gowns and soiree dresses in Vietnam, are made using traditional and modern cutting and 3D printing techniques, capturing the tonalities of the desert, rice fields, and other natural settings.

The Lotus Light collection featured traditional and modern Ao dai designs inspired by the logos of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Australia, the national flags of the two countries, and Australian Aboriginal patterns.

Meanwhile, the Black Swan evening wear collection featured exquisite black gowns inspired by the black swan, the symbol of the city of Perth.

Professor Jennifer Howell, Pro Vice-Chancellor Global Engagement of the University of Western Australia, said the event is not only a fashion show but also a cultural exchange that shows the solidarity and long-term relationship between Vietnam and Australia.

In an interview with The Hanoi Times, designer Tran Phuong Hoa expressed her happiness at the chance to present the 50 designs to honor the Vietnam-Australia friendship.

"Although the preparation time was quite rushed, I feel very fortunate to have received great support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Vietnamese Consulate General in Western Australia in organizing the first solo show and introducing Vietnamese fashion to international friends, especially at an important diplomatic event," Hoa said.

For the 50-design catwalk in Perth, Hoa's team brought 1.2 tons of costumes and equipment from Vietnam.

Tran Phuong Hoa is best known for her wedding dress designs that captivated fashionistas at New York Fashion Week in 2022 and Paris Fashion Week in 2023.
