CLASS SCHEDULE FOR THE WORKSHOP
Day 1 / 20 Nov 2017
10 AM (2h) – Group Lecture: What is a Photo Project? Methods and Approaches
Using examples from my research on Southeast Asian photography and my general interest in Asian photography, this lecture will reveal the different ways artists and photographers use the medium to tell stories, explore ideas and address personal / political issues.
12 PM (1h) – Lunch
1 PM onwards – On an individual basis, participants will clear their project ideas with me. I will offer tips before sending those with confirmed ideas out to work.
Day 2 / 21 Nov 2017 Whole Day
Shooting and consultation
Participants with no confirmed proposals should try to firm up their ideas. Others will schedule a one-to-one slot with me to look through the photographs they have created.
Day 3 / 22 Nov 2017 Whole Day
Shooting and consultation
The culling of images begins at this stage, during the one-to-one consultation with me. Additional tips will be given to each participant to develop her / his work.
Day 4 / 23 Nov 2017 Whole Day
Shooting and consultation
Day 5 / 24 Nov 2017
Before 3 PM – Participants can still shoot or cull their work. They should also make small 4R prints at the commercial lab, in preparation for the group critique and the editing session.
3 PM (3h) – Group Critique
In this session, participants will be involved in an internal critique, through which they will understand the strengths and pitfalls of their work. Hopefully they will also realise the power and limits of photography. I will moderate this session closely.
25 to 26 Nov 2017
The two-day editing session features a series of short, informal presentations. It introduces the five-picture edit and how we can apply its logic for newspaper and editorial work. We will then deconstruct the logic, so that we may develop different ways to edit each participant’s work.
The subtle differences in terms of editing for editorial spread, photobook, online portfolio, slideshow presentation and wall exhibition will be highlighted during the lecture.
In a collaborative way, each participant will then work with me towards a rough edit of her / his work.
