Politburo member sworn in as Vietnam's new president

The new president paid tribute to President Ho Chi Minh, revolutionary veterans, heroic mothers, fallen soldiers, and fellow citizens who made sacrifices for Vietnam to have such achievements, potential, and prestige on the world stage today.

Politburo member Luong Cuong, Executive Member of the Secretariat of the Party Central Committee, was today [October 21] elected as the new president of Vietnam for the term 2021-2026.

The newly elected State president took an oath of allegiance to the nation and the people and pledged to do his utmost to fulfill the tasks assigned to him by the Party, the State, and the people.

He vowed to uphold and strengthen the solidarity and unity of the Party, the people, and the army, further promote the strength of the great national unity, and build a strong and clean socialist rule of law that is truly of the people, by the people and for the people.

President Luong Cuong also pledged to strive to consolidate national defense and security and build revolutionary, regular, elite, and modern armed forces that will always remain a loyal and reliable political and fighting force of the Party, the State, and the people.

He pledged to pursue a consistent foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, peace, friendship, cooperation and development, diversification and multilateralism of foreign relations, dynamic and proactive global integration, and safeguarding the supreme national interests.

Vietnam will remain a trustworthy friend and partner, an active and responsible member of the international community, resolutely safeguard its independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, and maintain an environment of peace and stability for national construction and development, he said.

President Luong Cuong was born on August 15, 1957 in Viet Tri City, Phu Tho Province. He joined the Party in July 1978.

From January 2021 to April 2024, he was a member of the Politburo of the 13th Party Central Committee, member of the Standing Committee of the Central Military Commission, deputy to the 15th National Assembly, Chief of the General Department of Politics of the Vietnamese People's Army, Chief of the Discipline Inspection Committee of the Central Military Commission, member of the Central Steering Committee for the Prevention and Control of Corruption and Negative Practices.
