The visit is made at the invitations of Russian President Vladimir Putin and PM Dmitry Medvedev.

The Government leader’s Russia visit takes place in the context that the Vietnam-Russia comprehensive strategic partnership continues strong development in numerous fields such as politics, economics, defence security, science and technology, education and training and culture. The visit aims to realise the foreign policy set forth at the 12th National Party Congress and to deepen the Vietnam-Russia comprehensive strategic partnership.

This is the first foreign trip of Mr. Phuc as the new PM of Viet Nam. The visit presents the aspiration and determination of respective senior leaders to bring the comprehensive strategic partnership between Viet Nam and Russia to the next level.

Within the framework of the tour, PM Phuc will hold talks with his Russian counterpart Medvedev; meet with Russian President Putin and Duma leaders to exchange views and seek measures to beef up the bilateral ties, particularly in trade, investment, military technique, energy, education and training.

PM Phuc will attend the Commemorative Summit from May 19-20 in Sochi to mark the 20-year ASEAN-Russia dialogue relationship. The two sides will review the implementation of their major projects in specific areas, while discussing regional and international issues of mutual concern.

The two-way trade volume between Vietnam and Russia reached US$2.2 billion in 2015 and US$591 million in the first quarter this year. Currently Russia ranks 17 out of 101 countries and territories investing in Vietnam with a total capital of US$2 billion in 114 projects. Russian companies mainly invested in mining, processing and manufacturing industry in Vietnam.

Vietnamese companies have invested US$2.93 billion in Russia, mostly in oil and gas and trade with some big projects like Rusvietpetro, Gazpromviet and the Hanoi Trade Centre in Moscow. The Commemorative Summit to mark the 20th anniversary of the ASEAN-Russia dialogue relationship takes place in the context of positive progress in bilateral ties.

At the meeting, Russian and ASEAN leaders will discuss and draw up guidelines for strengthening the ASEAN-Russia Partnership and make it more practical and effective in the future.
